Too Good Not To Share

11 As high as heaven is over the earth, so strong is his love to those who fear him.

- Psalm 103:11

This got to me, and was too good not to share. Have a great day!

Why Open Source Is The Way To Go

open_source_by_zbychowiecThere is a movement going on that is transitioning the way that people look at software, and the methods to obtain it. With the economy it is growing harder and harder for individuals and businesses to spring for expensive software. This leaves the option of developing their own, which in itself can be expense, or using open source technology as their source of software.

While I do not use it exclusively, lately I’ve been looking at some open source programs such as: WordPress, Ubuntu, GIMP, as well as a few other odds and ends. Some of the things that I find appealing about open source are:

  • It is free!
  • There is access to the source code so that you can see how things work (I thrive on things like this :) ).
  • A lot of times you can edit the source code if you need to customize the software for a specific task.
  • A computer can be set up with software that is absolutely free giving full functionality just as if it was bought from the store, it just takes a little bit of digging.
  • It supports smaller developers rather than huge corporations.
  • Oh…and it’s free!

I believe that as the economy grows tighter and tighter, open source technology will be looked at more and more as a source or tools for businesses as well as individuals.  So go dig in!

Do you use any open source programs?

A Few Things From My Week

  • We started a small group this week, with several other couples.  It will be a great way to get to know other couples our age and discuss things.
  • We got to eat at a restaurant that I’ve been wanting to eat at for a few years:  Weber Grill, and yes, it was excellent.
  • Last weekend Jessi and I found it was good just to get away from the normal routines and schedules and get out on the town.  Spent the afternoon spending gift card from Christmas, and sitting in a coffee shop just talking.  I could not have asked for a better Valentine’s Day.
  • Productivity was on a high this week, got a lot done
  • Suspense was the name of the game with Jessi’s job, still waiting to see what will happen.
  • Prayer’s came true, allowing us to relax and rely on God to take care of things.

Got Blues?

Buddy_GuySo, it’s more blues this week. Sometimes I just cannot get enough of this stuff. It’s definitely the groove and feeling that’s put into it. You can feel it as you listen.

I’ve had Buddy Guy on my list quite a bit this week. He’s a great artist that puts a lot of feeling into his work. It’s got a “Chicago Blues” feel to it and keeps my foot tapping. If you’re a fan of the Blues you’ll definitely want to give this a listen.

The Seperation of Work and Home

It may go without saying, but there has to be a seperation between work life and home life.  I have had an issue with this in the past.  I tend to bring my work home with me in one form or another.

This causes a few problems:

  • It cheats my wife out of my time.
  • It makes her feel less important than my work.
  • It does not allow me to clear my mind.

There are periods in my life that I have a hard time with this, and there are times when it does not seem to be an issue.  I’ve recently taken a few steps to help with this:

I’ve recently taken my work email off of my phone. It was nice to have it on there while I was at work, but it caused issues at home.  Everytime I would get an email I would check it to see what it was about.  It was never anything that couldn’t wait.

I’ve limited the amount of side projects that I do when at home. There are times throughout the week that I am home by myself, this is usually when I work on the other projects that I do.  I truly enjoy what I do and that makes it really hard to stop working on things.

I am finding new reasons every day that there needs to be this seperation between work life and home life.  There will always be ways that I can make this seperation better.

How do you make the seperation? Ready…GO!
